7A- Testing The Hypothesis Part 1
Today I am going to be testing a hypothesis.
1) pick and opportunity and stick with it
The opportunity that I have chosen to use for the reminder of the class is the parking issues at the University of Florida. This was a bug on my bug list and I truly believe that something can be done to fix this issue.
2) Who, What, Why
Who: The students and staff at the university of Florida
What: Parking lots at the University of Florida not being beneficial to everyone
Why: Students and staff members are having longer commute times because of the parking and transportation issues.
3)
Testing The Who:
- There are many people at that find the parking at the University of Florida to not be very good. For example, new students visiting the campus or even their parents. I sat down with a freshman and spoke with her about what her first impression on the parking was. When I spoke with her she stated that is was very difficult on move in day because you could only park in front of your dorm for 30 minutes to unload and then the car had to be moved to the commuter lot and you had to walk back. This walk was almost half a mile. I also spoke with an individual who was visit for a tour. This individual was coming in for a tour on a week day and typically during the week parking is restricted during business hours so it was very difficult for this individual and his family to find parking on campus in order to get to the tour.
Testing The What:
- Now of the questions I asked all my interviewees was do they notice that the parking is always bad or is it only at certain times. Again, I spoke with a freshman who is living in a dorm. She lives in Beaty Towers, which has a pretty small parking lot and this is for red 1 decals only. She expressed to me that over winter break majority of the people living on campus had gone home, however, she had to stay for a couple extra days because of her job. She told me that even over winter break when no classes were in session she received a ticket for parking in a red 1 decal parking lot. She made it clear that she was the only car in the parking lot at the time. This made it known to me that parking is almost always a hassle at the University of Florida
Testing the why:
- After my interviews I noticed that individuals with an orange decal did not really have any parking issues at all. I think the reason for this is because there are many orange decal parking lots all over campus and they are almost always never full. After my interviews it became clear to me that the students living on campus did not mind walking to class, the issue came when they wanted to go get groceries and could not park anywhere near their dorm. The issue for the students living off campus was that when it came time for them to go to class they either had to take the bus all the way to school or park at the commuter lot and wait for a bus from there, this added a lot of time to their commute to school.
4) Summary
- After interviewing with 5 very different people, it became clear to me that there is an extreme need for a solution to parking. Students of the University, staff of the University, and even employees at the hospital find parking at this school to be extremely difficult. Something new that I learned about this opportunity is that the parking is not just a problem for the students, it is a problem for the staff as well. I don't think a solution to this problem is going to be very easy to try and figure out but something definitely needs to be done.

No doubt about it, parking is an issue on campus. Great job in vetting out opinions on this campus crisis. Unfortunately, aside from building up, as in a parking structure with multiple levels, I don’t see a short-term answer. I have seen these multi-level parking facilities go up rather quickly, so there is hope. The only outstanding issue to address is the funding. Does UF believe investing such funds is warranted given the only benefit to the same is increased moral from the students? Time will tell.
ReplyDeleteHey Taylor!
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see how parking is an issue on campus. Although I live off campus, parking is an issue in every urban area. So, it's understandable that on a campus with over 50,000 people there would be a parking problem. I am very curious as to how you'll approach a solution to this issue considering what barriers might come with it. On the one hand, funding could come from the University, however if they are not willing or concerned with this issue, that would make it more difficult to accomplish.
Hey Taylor, I think that your chose a really good topic for this assignment as almost everyone that goes to UF has had a problem with campus parking. For me personally, I have gotten multiple tickets during my career here at UF and they have been both from car parking and scooter parking. Again this was a really good topic and I think you followed the assignment directions very well. Overall really good job!
