5A-Identifying Local Opportunities

Local Opportunities
The news paper that I have decided to use is the Gainesville Sun. I am going to talk about some of the local issues and identify some opportunities that may come from these stories
1. Gainesville PD: Contractor steals elderly woman's jewelry.
https://www.gainesville.com/news/20200130/gainesville-pd-contractor-steals-elderly-womans-jewelry
This story explains that an elderly woman was having some remodeling working done in her home. After the contractor had left she realized that $400 dollars worth of jewelry were missing. The contractor then went on to sell the woman's jewelry, which she identified was hers.
The problem in this article is that this elderly woman trusted that this man was going to go into her house and do what he was there to do. Instead this contractor stole from her and I am sure she feels violated.
In this situation the individuals with the problem include the resident of the home, the thief, the police department, the families of both of the individuals involved, her insurance company, the pawn shop, anyone the contractor works for, and even the jail. These are all individuals that may have a potential problem because of this situation.
2. Former city worker gets a prison deal.
https://www.gainesville.com/news/20200130/former-city-worker-agrees-to-prison-deal
This story explains that this former city worker stole over $93,000 from taxpayers has decided to take a plea deal. This plea deal states that this individual will do between 2-15 years with a maximum of 30 years probation.
In this situation the people that could have a potential problem are the residents of Alachua county, the criminal herself, the criminals family, the investigators, and the people she was working for, as well as the jail.
The next stories I have found was on alligator.org
3. UF health monitors rumors of coronavirus spreading to Gainesville.
this story explains the current situation of the coronavirus at UF. This article states the the student healthcare center got information that stated, a student's family member had recently traveled from china. As of now none of the students that have been in contact with this family member are showing signs of the coronavirus. UF are monitoring these students closely and we will be notified of any changes.
There are many people that are affected when it comes to this situation. The student body in general, the specific individuals that have been in contact with the virus, the teachers at the university, the hospital and the student healthcare center, the families of the students at the university.
4. UF student dies days after being struck by vehicle.
This story explains that a UF student was struck by a vehicle on Monday night and was on critical condition for 2 days. There was evidence of spinal and brain injury. the family has started a gofundme page and has almost reached their goal.
This story affects many people. this story main affects the friends and family of the victim, as well as the victim. this story also affects the individual that was driving the vehicle, that individuals family, the police department, the paramedics, the doctors.
5. UF student falls from parking garage, in critical condition.
This story explains that a student at UF fell off a parking garage and is in critical condition. This individual has suffered a brain injury and many broken bones. His friends and family have said that his condition is improving and the hospital staff has removed is breathing tube.
There are many people affected by this situation. The individual himself, his friends and family, the doctors and first responders, the owners of the parking garage, The students at the university, and maybe even lawyers.

Comments

  1. It is a shame the contractor would do such a thing. It harms the industry as a whole when these types of crimes are committed. Homeowners and the elderly are already leery of allowing strangers into their homes, and to have exactly what their worse fears are to occur, sets society back. Throwing the book at the criminal is my knee jerk reaction, but what does that change? Perhaps the contractor companies are better off training their employees to the perils of such actions proactively.

  2. I really liked how you wrote about articles that were in the Gainesville Sun because this made me want to read and understand what each article was about. I thought that the coronavirus article was very interesting, as this seems to happen a lot at UF. Rumors get spread, leading to real concern amongst the UF student body. I am personally relieved that the perceived spread of the coronavirus to UF is only just a rumor. I really liked how you gave your blog post some distinctiveness with the highlighting of each article in different colors, but unfortunately the last one was hard to read because of the dark color. That being said, I really enjoyed the post!

  3. Taylor,
I am absolutely heartbroken to hear that fellow students have been victims of such accidents at the University. I really hope some stronger regulations are set near the area to improve student safety. Students should feel safe in the Gainesville area, and drivers should be more cautious on the road knowing there are college kids nearby. I'm really glad to know that both victims' families are receiving lots of support through their GoFundMe pages though.
